Knights Finish Season
May 13, 2008 at 8:50 am | In GamesThe Olney Central Blue Knights finished their season on Monday with a loss to the Rend Lake Warriors. Olney forced extra innings by scoring 5 runs in the final three frames only to lose in an extra inning battle. Rend Lake scored one in the top of the eleventh inning to defeat OCC and end their season. Olney Central went 1-2 in the conference tournament by losing the opening round to SWIC 5-3, winning the second round matchup against Lakeland 14-1, and losing to Rend Lake 6-5 in 11 innings. The Blue Knights finished the regular season on a high note winning their last 8 conference games to clinch 2nd place in the GRAC with a 15-7 record.
Conley Wins game #1000
May 2, 2008 at 9:05 am | In GamesCoach Dennis Conley and the Olney Central Blue Knights went into the week needing 3 victories to reach number 1000 in Coach Conley’s 28 year career. Monday with a 4-1 win over Lincoln Trail in conference action, Coach Conley took a step closer to the milestone. The table was set for wednesday to be the day of fate with a conference home game against Southwestern and a split squad double-header at Greenville College. The split squad team that went to Greenville won their first game 7-0 putting Conley one away from his 1000 victory at Olney Central. The game against Southwestern would be the first chance for #1000. Southwestern jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning after a homerun and two base hits. The Olney Central bats were held in check until the 7th inning where the struck for three runs. Immediately Southwestern got back on the scoreboard with two runs of their own in top of the eighth. It was starting to look as if this wasn’t going to be the game that Conley would win #1000. The Blue Knights put up a zero in the top of the ninth to keep the deficit at 1. After a pair of outs and an error, Olney had a man on second with pinch hitter Bryce Labhart up. Labhart drove a the pitch up the middle to deliver a game tying single. After two scoreless innings, the 4-4 tie went into the 12th. The first two hitters for Southwestern were sat down in order only to have the next three score. What would have been the eighth run was gunned out at the plate by Centerfielder Colby Shaw to end the inning and keep the score at 7-4. Olney Central started off the bottom of the 12th with three consecutive singles that scored one run and brought the knights within two. Troy Ellis stepped up to the plate with two men on an no one out. Ellis worked the count to 1-2, then took a fastball at the letters and drove it over the left field wall. Coach Dennis Conley won game #1000 in a 12 inning marathon game the went down to the last at bat. Congratulations to Coach Conley for achieving this prestigious milestone in his coaching career. The Blue Knights will be in action Saturday at home with Southeastern Illinois. First pitch will be at 12:00 p.m.
